Negative Effects of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy has numerous positive benefits--primarily, tension and pain relief. Therapists use a number of techniques to relax the body. However, some massage techniques can cause a number of physiological issues.-
Pain
-
Shiatsu and deep-tissue massage use pressure to relieve pain and tension, which may lead to residual pain. Therapists can irritate nerves or damage muscle tissue, causing pain that can last for a few hours or days following the massage, depending on the severity of the injury.
Circulatory
-
Always disclose your medical history to your therapist before getting a massage. If you have circulatory issues, talk with your doctor before getting a massage. If you are susceptible to deep vein thrombosis, or blood clotting, you may be at particular risk, as the clot can become loosened and move through your body.
Allergies
-
Many massage therapists use aromatherapy for relaxation. While many therapists use scented candles and oils, some apply scented massage oil during the massage. Theses oils may cause an allergic reaction. Check with the therapist to make sure she uses a hypoallergenic oil.
Infection
-
People with weak immune systems may want to avoid massage therapy, which releases toxins and enzymes built up in the muscle system. The body is flush with bacteria and toxins immediately following a massage. Following the session, therapists remind their patients to drink a lot of water to help flush the toxins quicker.
Skin Fragility
-
If you bruise easily, tell your therapist before the massage so he can adjust the level of pressure. If you have diabetes and associated skin-fragility issues, always tell your massage therapist. Many massage therapists will not work on diabetics, as the therapy can damage their skin and lower the body's blood sugar.
