The Disadvantages of Colon Cleansing
According to Egyptian legend, the Pharaoh's physicians were picnicking on the Nile and saw the god Thoth in the form of an ibis give himself an enema with his beak. That gave the royal physicians the idea about colon cleansing and high colonics. But just because something is traditional does not mean it's good for you.-
Considerations
-
Many colon cleansing products claim they will cleanse the body of toxins. But, as practicing physician and best-selling author Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. points out, these toxins are never identified.
Evidence
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, there is very little scientific evidence to support the theory that colon cleansing has any medical benefits whatsoever. Most conventional doctors will not recommend colon cleansing for their patients.
Warning
-
The Mayo Clinic also points out that the main danger of colon cleansing is becoming dehydrated because of diarrhea. Many colon cleansing products are made with ingredients like psyllium husk, which often gives a person diarrhea.
Fasting
-
Many colon cleansing products or kits recommend fasting. However, people with conditions such as low blood pressure or diabetes need to eat regularly.
Cost
-
Colon cleansing products and kits are expensive. According to Dr. Brian E. Lacey, an economical way to have bowel movements regularly is to drink plenty of water, eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet and exercise regularly.
