What Is Shilajit?

  1. Identification

    • In its basic form, shilajit is a dark organic compound, often deep red, brown, or black in color. Although it may look like stone, it is thought to be decomposed and compressed plant material. When taken medicinally, it will usually be found in a gravelly powder, which is often put into capsules.

    Main uses

    • Shilajit is most commonly used to increase longevity and sexual potency.

    Alternate Uses

    • It is also used to treat a wide array of other conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, asthma, pancreatic disorders, high blood sugar and a weakened immune system.

    Geography

    • Shilajit is usually found and used in India but is also gathered and used in countries such as China, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan.

    Warning

    • Although popular in certain parts of the world, the medicinal properties, positive or otherwise, of shilajit have not been confirmed by the FDA or any other major medical regulatory group. In addition, many shilajit compounds contain potentially toxic metals.
