Medical Uses of Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed oil is a derivative from the flax plant and is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, an important part of a healthy diet. Flaxseed oil, also called linseed oil, has a number of medical uses that are seen as natural or alternative treatments for a variety of health conditions. It may take up to six weeks for you to see the health benefits.-
Lower Cholesterol
-
Flaxseed oil and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids may increase your level of HDL--what is commonly called "good" cholesterol--and can help lower LDL ("bad" cholesterol) levels.
Healthy Heart
-
One of the elements in flaxseed oil, called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), can lower your risk of heart disease through a number of factors. ALA keeps your blood vessels healthy, keeps platelets from sticking together and may even prevent minor arrhythmias.
Reduce Inflammation
-
The omega-3 found in flaxseed oil is a naturally-occurring anti-inflammatory agent. People who have arthritis, lupus, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disorders may find a reduction in inflammation by adding flaxseed oil to their diets.
Forms
-
Flaxseed oil is available as a dietary supplement in two forms. Cooking oil can be used as a salad dressing and general condiment. Soft-gel capsules are purchased at health food stores.
Dosage
-
Adults can safely take up to 2 tbsp. of flaxseed oil or two soft-gels daily for medical use. Check with your doctor before giving your child flaxseed oil.
Warning
-
If you are taking blood thinners, it may not be safe for you to use flaxseed oil as treatment for a medical condition. Flaxseed will make your blood thinning medication more effective, which could be dangerous.
