Therapeutic Horse Grants

Grants can provide emotionally, physically and mentally disabled horse enthusiasts with opportunities that they might not receive otherwise.

Grants available to therapeutic riding programs and their students can provide therapy programs with extra financial support and enable them to continue receiving or even increase the availability of therapy.

Equine related grants for therapeutic riding are available annually from a number of sources, including the American Quarter Horse Foundation, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the EQUUS Foundation and the Pennsylvania National Horse Show.
  1. American Quarter Horse Foundation

    • The American Quarter Horse Foundation supports therapeutic riding with the America’s Horse Cares program. The program is “dedicated to creating an ongoing funding base to support special-needs individuals and organizations that benefit from equine experiences," according to the American Quarter Horse Association website.

The foundation accepts donations from its members and awards yearly grants to North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) therapeutic riding facilities.

    Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation

    • The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation has established the Quality of Life Grants Program in order to award “grants to nonprofit organizations that provide services to individuals with paralysis.”

These grants are given to “programs or projects that improve the daily lives of people with paralysis, with some emphasis on, but not limited to, paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries,” according to the Christopher Reeve website.

Therapeutic riding facilities have received the grants as part of the “Actively Achieving” segment of the grant program. The projects and facilities that receive these grants receive them for enabling paralyzed individuals to be active.

    • The EQUUS Foundation annually provides thousands of dollars in grant money to equestrian-related charities, including therapeutic riding programs. The EQUUS Foundation is “an outreach organization that promotes the positive use of the horse by supporting projects initiated by nonprofit organizations,” according to a release on the United States Equestrian Federation website.

The majority of the grant money awarded by the EQUUS Foundation is given to programs specializing in mental, emotional and physical therapy using horses.
