Michigan Massage Therapist Certification
On January 9, 2009, Michigan officially declared the terms of its new law to regulate certification for professional massage therapists. State mandate now requires massage therapists to complete an approved curriculum, pay annual dues, and pass a qualifying examination.-
Features
-
Any person who employs "application of a system of structured touch, pressure, movement, and holding to the soft tissue of the human body..." (http://legislature.mi.gov/documents/2007-2008/billenrolled/House/pdf/2008-HNB-5651.pdf) must adhere to state regulations. Performing complementary therapies, including body scrubs and hydrotherapy, also necessitates a license.
Exceptions
-
Practitioners of modalities like Feldenkrais method, Trager approach, Asian bodywork, Reflexology, or Reiki, need not apply. Presently unlicensed massage therapy students may only work in a professional setting under the guidance of a licensed massage therapist.
Requirements
-
Applicants must be 18 years or older; have a high school diploma or equivalent; and complete at least 500 hours of an approved curriculum in an accredited school. Applicants must also pass a board-sanctioned examination.
Cost
-
Applying for licensing costs $95, including the application processing fee ($20) and the yearly license fee ($75). Additional expenses may include examination fees and personal liability insurance.
Considerations
-
The Michigan regulatory committee may grant state licenses to applicants who provide proof of long-term professional experience and education. Applicants who hold massage therapy licenses from other states may also qualify for licensing in Michigan.
