What Is Conversion Therapy?

Conversion therapy is a pseudoscientific practice that seeks to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity. It is based on the false premise that homosexuality is a mental illness or disorder that can be "cured." There is no credible scientific evidence to support the use of conversion therapy, and it has been widely condemned by major medical and mental health organizations.

Conversion therapy can take many forms, but it typically involves some combination of talk therapy, counseling, and behavioral modification techniques. Therapists may try to persuade individuals that their same-sex attractions or gender identity are wrong or sinful. They may also pressure individuals to change their behavior, such as by avoiding contact with same-sex individuals or dressing in a more gender-conforming way.

Conversion therapy can be incredibly harmful, both psychologically and physically. It can lead to depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and suicidal thoughts. It can also cause individuals to lose their sense of self, their support networks, and their ability to live authentically.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to ban conversion therapy. Several states and cities in the United States have passed laws prohibiting the practice, and similar laws are pending in other jurisdictions. In 2018, the American Psychological Association called for a nationwide ban on conversion therapy.

Conversion therapy is a dangerous and harmful practice that has no place in our society. It is essential that we continue to work to end conversion therapy and protect the rights of all individuals to live authentically and free from discrimination.
