Benefits of Stone Reflexology

Stone reflexology is the use of heated stones to stimulate points (acupressure or energy points) on the hands and the feet. It is believed that the warm stones have healing properties and are therapeutic for the body. Heated stone reflexology is used for relaxation as well.
  1. Spiritual Cleansing

    • Using heated stones for massage purposes is thought to have started with the Native Americans, who believed that the hot stones cleansed the body of physical and spiritual impurities. The heated stones were used in sweat lodge ceremonies and aided participants in achieving a state of relaxation.

    Improved Circulation

    • Stone reflexology can improve circulation to the hands and the feet. During heated stone reflexology, the massage therapist or reflexologist holds the warm stone in her palm while performing the traditional reflexology procedure, including massaging and stimulating. The therapist may also use cold stones as a contrast for additional stimulation.

    Modesty Considerations

    • Unlike in traditional massage, the participant needs only to undress the lower arms, lower legs, hands and feet for the massage, so clients often feel more comfortable with this type of treatment. The client is able to attain a state of relaxation without having to worry about becoming undraped or exposed.

    Reduced Stress

    • Reflexology itself can be quite soothing and relaxing. With the addition of the warm stones, it quickly becomes a method of decreasing tension in the hands and the feet, draining away the stresses and anxieties. Some reflexologists will incorporate the use of essential oils into the treatments, creating a multi-sensory massage experience.

    Warning

    • Heated stone reflexology is not recommended for those with open wounds or sores on the hands or feet, as well as pregnant women; and those with skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema should avoid heated or cold stone therapy entirely. Practitioners should follow proper procedure in cleaning and sterilizing the stones between uses, to avoid contaminating clients.
