What Is Habit Reversal Training?

Habit reversal training (HRT) is a behavioral therapy technique used to break bad habits and replace them with good ones. It is based on the idea that habits are formed through a cycle of three steps:

1) The cue: This is something that triggers the habit, such as the sight of a donut or the feeling of stress.

2) The routine: This is the actual habit itself, such as eating the donut or smoking a cigarette.

3) The reward: This is something that makes you feel good after you do the habit, such as the taste of the donut or the relief of the stress.

HRT works by interrupting this cycle at each step. First, you identify the cues and rewards that trigger your habit. Then, you develop new ways to respond to these cues and rewards that don't involve the bad habit. For example, if you're trying to break the habit of smoking, you might identify the cues that trigger your smoking, such as stress or boredom. Then, you might develop new ways to cope with these cues, such as taking a walk or listening to music.

HRT can be used to break a variety of bad habits, including smoking, drinking, drug use, gambling, and overeating. It is typically conducted in a group setting, but can also be done individually. HRT is a safe and effective treatment that can help you improve your life and well-being.
