Reflexology as Migraine Treatment

Reflexology is the practice of using pressure, similar to a massage, to relieve stress. This technique has also been said to relieve certain pains, such as migraine headaches, and help heal the body of a number of ailments. Reflexology is based on the idea that different reflexes in different parts of the body correspond to all other parts of the body. Though it is usually applied to the foot, reflexology can be performed on hands and ears as well. It is practiced by licensed reflexologists, who are usually not qualified to prescribe medications or diagnose ailments.

    • A study of 220 migraine sufferers in Denmark aimed to determine the effect of reflexology on migraines. In the study, 78 fully-trained reflexologists performed treatment on each of the individuals multiple times, completing a predetermined series of treatments. At the end of the three-month series, 81 percent of patients claimed that their headaches had either been completely eliminated or helped to some degree. The results of this study indicate that reflexology can indeed have a beneficial effect on migraines.

    • While reflexology may seem to some to be rather simple and straightforward, it tends to be much more effective when performed by a licensed professional. There are a number of reflexology schools throughout the United States and students spend a great deal of time and energy learning the most effective reflexology techniques. Search local phone books for licensed reflexologists in your area. Quite a bit of time and money can be saved if a certified reflexologist is selected from the beginning. During the session, let the practitioner know you are suffering from migraines. He or she may ask a few questions to get a better feel for the ailment, then apply therapy. A good reflexologist will do what can be done using reflexology, then refer a patient to a doctor if the problem does not get better. Remember, a reflexologist is not a replacement for a doctor of any kind.
