About Reflexology for Hands & Feet

Reflexology is a type of bodywork using alternating pressure on specific points of the hands and feet to stimulate areas in different parts of the body.
  1. History

    • There is evidence that different cultures in Egypt and China used forms of reflexology more than 4,000 years ago.

    Features

    • The hand and feet reflex points represent a mirror image of the body's organs and glands. The toes and fingers correspond to the head region, while the ankles and wrists match the pelvic area.

    Function

    • Certified reflexologists use reflexology as a complementary health tool usually in a health spa or wellness center. Reflexology is used to increase circulation, reduce stress, induce relaxation, and decrease pain.

    Considerations

    • A certified reflexologist does not diagnose or treat any disease. Improvement in the function of organs and glands is the goal of a reflexology session.

    Facts

    • Sessions usually last 30 to 60 minutes, and the most popular area worked on is the feet. Although many people believe reflexology is a form of massage, the American Reflexology Certification Board does not. It considers reflexology an art and a science.
