Metaphysical Properties of Dzi Beads

Dzi beads reach back thousands of years. Three classifications exist: Ancient, middle period, and new period. Ancient beads are at least 1,300 years old, those from the middle period are 100 to 350 years old, and those from the new period are less than 10 years old. The considerable gap between classifications is said to be due to a void in the creation of Dzi beads in Tibet. A chemical process utilizing sugar and an acidic material on pure agate results in the magnificent designs on pure Dzi beads. These designs are believed to hold various metaphysical and mystical blessings from divine beings.

  1. Odd-Eyed Beads

    • Beads with an odd number of eyes are considerably more important and valuable. Eyes are depicted by perfect circles on the surface of the agate. They represent the celestial bodies --- sun, moon, stars --- while the exact number of each represents a different blessing. The most valued have nine eyes. The belief surrounding these beads depicts them as bringers of great fortune and blessings of long and good health while radiating strength, authority, and prosperity over its wearer.

    Even-eyed Beads

    • The eyes on even-eyed beads also represent celestial bodies. However, these beads are coveted far less than those with odd numbers because they have less metaphysical power. The number of eyes on these beads ranges to more than 20.

    Animal and Other Beads

    • Other beads may or may not have eyes, but they do have significant depictions that represent their own blessings. These beads represent animals, geological formations and botanical images. Some examples include tiger teeth, leaves, mountains and water waves.

    Types of Metaphysical Blessings

    • The beads are said to hold a vast scope of blessings and powers. These powers tend to revolve around luck and the many roads that wind from an epicenter of good fortune. Health benefits are a common property. Another common benefit is found in an aura. Auras are radiations of intangible qualities in a person or object. These range from authoritative and confident to humble and kind.

    Other Metaphysical Properties

    • Beads are said to reduce body heat, which decreases susceptibility to common illnesses. Another property of the beads is said to be self-confidence. Simply having confidence in oneself opens doors to many opportunities that may lead to happiness and satisfaction.
