What Intercostal

Intercostal spaces:

Are the spaces between the ribs. They are numbered 1-11, from the top to the bottom of the rib cage.

Are bounded superiorly and inferiorly by the superior and inferior borders of the ribs.

Are filled with intercostal muscles, blood vessels, and nerves.

The intercostal muscles are responsible for raising and lowering the ribs, which in turn causes the lungs to expand and contract.

The blood vessels and nerves that supply the intercostal muscles and the lungs also pass through the intercostal spaces.

The intercostal spaces are important clinical landmarks. They are used to identify the location of the ribs and to assess the function of the lungs.
