What is the definitiom APPENDIX?
The appendix is a small finger-shaped pouch projecting from the beginning of the large intestine. It is located in the right iliac fossa, usually below the ileocecal valve (i.e., where the ileum joins the cecum). It is a small, blind sac that is attached to the large intestine. The appendix is about 2-4 inches long and is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. It is made up of lymphoid tissue, which helps to fight infection. The appendix is not essential for life, and it can be removed without any major problems. However, if the appendix becomes inflamed, it can cause a condition called appendicitis, which can be very painful and even life-threatening.
Functions:
- The major function of the appendix is in lymphoid tissue associated with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT).
- The appendix contributes to the development and maturation of B lymphocytes and also helps in the maintenance of normal gut flora.
