What is closed bladder irrigation?
Closed bladder irrigation (CBI) is a procedure that is used to irrigate the bladder through a catheter. This procedure is usually performed to remove blood clots or other debris from the bladder after surgery, trauma, or other conditions that may cause the bladder to become obstructed. CBI can also be used to administer medications directly into the bladder, which can be helpful in treating certain urinary tract infections.
CBI is a relatively simple procedure that is typically performed by a nurse or other medical professional. The patient will be placed on their back with their legs slightly elevated, and a catheter will be inserted into the bladder. The catheter will be connected to an irrigation bag that contains sterile saline solution. The saline solution will flow into the bladder and then out through the catheter, flushing out any debris or clots. The irrigation process will be repeated until the bladder is clear of debris.
CBI can be a slightly uncomfortable procedure, but it is usually well-tolerated by patients. Some patients may experience some discomfort or burning during the irrigation process, but this should subside once the irrigation is complete.
CBI is a safe and effective procedure that can be used to treat a variety of urinary tract conditions. It is important to follow the instructions of your doctor or nurse when having CBI performed to ensure the best possible outcome.
