How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Identify the source of the fruit flies. Check for overripe fruit or vegetables in your kitchen, and keep an eye out for any cracks or gaps in your windows and doors.

Eliminate any potential food sources. Remove overripe fruit and vegetables, and store any remaining produce in airtight containers. Take out the trash regularly and keep all food and drink containers covered.

Set up fruit fly traps. There are many different types of fruit fly traps available, both homemade and commercial. Fill a small jar with apple cider vinegar or a mixture of equal parts water and sugar, and add a few drops of dish soap. The fruit flies will be attracted to the sweet liquid, but will be trapped when they try to land on the surface.

Use sticky traps. Sticky traps can be placed anywhere you have seen fruit flies. You can make your own sticky traps by coating index cards with a thin layer of petroleum jelly or honey, or you can buy them at the store.

Light a citronella candle. Citronella candles can repel fruit flies, so lighting one in your kitchen or patio can help to keep them away.

Remove standing water. Fruit flies are also attracted to standing water, so make sure to empty any containers that collect water, such as birdbaths or potted plant saucers.

Use essential oils: Certain essential oils like lemongrass, eucalyptus, and peppermint are effective in repelling fruit flies. You can either diffuse these oils in your home or spray them directly onto the flies.

Prune nearby trees and plants: If you have fruit trees or other plants that produce fruit near your home, make sure to prune them regularly to remove any fallen fruit.
