Can a possum or rat get rabies?

While both possums and rats can carry diseases, neither species is generally known to be a significant carrier or transmitter of rabies. Rabies is most commonly associated with mammals such as raccoons, foxes, skunks, and certain strains of bats. Possums and rats, while potentially carrying other zoonotic diseases, are not typically linked to high-risk rabies transmission like the aforementioned animals.
