What is an avulsion?
Avulsions are classified into three types:
- Complete avulsion: This is the most severe type, where the body part is completely separated from the body. Replantation surgery may be necessary to try and reattach the severed part.
- Partial avulsion: In this case, the body part is partially detached but still attached by some tissue or skin. Microsurgery may be required to reconstruct and reattach the affected tissue.
- Avulsion fracture: This type of avulsion involves a fracture of the underlying bone, along with the tearing of soft tissues. Treatment typically involves bone realignment and stabilization, followed by wound management.
Avulsion injuries can be highly complex and challenging to treat. They often require prompt medical attention, specialized surgical interventions, and extensive rehabilitation to restore function and minimize long-term complications.
