What pathogen causes ringworm image?
The causative agents of ringworm, or tinea, are various species of dermatophytes which are a group of keratinophilic fungi. These fungi thrive on the substances called keratin. Keratin is found in the skin, hair, and nails of humans and animals. Some common dermatophyte species that cause ringworm include:
- Trichophyton species: These fungi are responsible for several types of ringworm, including tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp), tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), and tinea cruris (jock itch).
- Microsporum species: Microsporum canis is the most common cause of ringworm in cats and dogs and can also be transmitted to humans, causing tinea capitis and tinea corporis.
- Epidermophyton species: Epidermophyton floccosum is primarily associated with tinea cruris and tinea pedis (athlete's foot).
