Why Do Bed Bugs Bite?
Bed bugs are small parasites belonging to the Cimicidae insect family. They may reside within human living spaces. They are generally tan to reddish-brown in color and oval-shaped. Adults measure around 1/4 inch. Recently, outbreaks have happened in many developed countries as the symptoms of bites are not always easy to recognize.-
How They Feed
-
Bed bugs feed on the blood of warm-blooded mammals and birds. Their bite contains anesthetics, which numb the wound in order to give them sufficient time to withdraw the amount of blood needed for sustenance. The host does not usually realize they are being bitten but may feel discomfort at the wound site later. Once they have had enough, they will return to their hiding place. The most common places to find bed bugs are within mattresses and box springs, close to the host.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms may vary depending on the individual, the amount of bites and time frame. Many people do not feel anything. Bites may rise up as a small red lump, or a linear series of lumps on the skin. They are generally very itchy and can lead to allergic reactions in some cases.
Treatment
-
Treatment of bed bug bites is generally very easy to manage. The bites will usually disappear within one to three weeks on their own. The general problem reported by people is the amount of itching at the bite site that can occur. Simply taking an antihistamine can help. However, see your doctor if you experience shortness of breath, rash, spreading redness around the wound site, tightening of the throat or facial swelling.
Inspection and Prevention
-
There are a few things you can do if you suspect a bed bug infestation. Conduct a thorough inspection of any furniture you have purchased. Place double-sided carpet tape near your bed to catch them. Look with a flashlight just before dawn around your bedding, as that is when they tend to feed. Search for tiny reddish droppings. If still not satisfied, call in a professional exterminator to inspect the premises.
If Infestation is Present
-
A professional may use insecticides to get rid if the infestation. However, if you do not wish to hire one, there are a few measures you can take. Wear pajamas that cover all exposed skin. Get rid of clutter on the floors around the room. Keep bedding off of the floor. Place bed legs in containers of paraffin oil or water to prevent bugs from crawling up them. Thoroughly steam clean and vacuum all mattresses and bedding.
