Organic Bed Bug Remedies

Bed bugs can be extremely difficult to get rid of, and many people recommend the use of harsh pesticides and chemicals in order to eliminate them. But there are alternative organic bed bug remedies that can be used together to eradicate the problem. Just remember that persistence is key; you may need to complete these methods several times in order to ensure your home is bed bug free.
  1. Diatomaceous Earth

    • Diatomaceous earth is completely organic, it is made from ground-up shells of fresh water diatoms. DE commonly comes in the form of a fine powder; it has no odors or additives. It is very effective in killing off pests such as bed bugs and fleas. Once you put DE in your home it stays there, continually killing bed bugs. Once you notice any dead bed bugs vacuum or sweep the mineral and carcasses. Then re-apply as necessary. Make sure you wear protective goggles and a face mask when applying DE; it can be irritating to the eyes and you don't want to breathe it in. This is a great alternative to pesticides because it does not harm pets or children.

    Steam Treatment

    • Bed bugs are highly sensitive to variations in temperature. You can kill bed bugs if you raise the temperature to anything over 45 degree Celsius. One method for doing this is through the use of steam. Bed bug exterminators often utilize this method (they sometimes use it in conjunction with insecticides; talk to the professional about using only the steam treatment). This treatment is highly effective in killing the bed bugs from upholstered furniture, mattresses and carpets.

    Organic Pest Control Products

    • Many companies are coming out with new products that are completely organic, 100 percent non-toxic and safe for children and pets. These products have active enzymes that act against the bed bug's exoskeleton. These organic products can also be used to kill lice and mites.

    Water and Heat

    • Wash all clothing and bedding in very hot water (you may need to change the setting on your water heater). The water needs to be at or above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is possible in your area and climate, raise the temperature in your house to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. You need to leave the house at this temperature for half an hour. Make sure you arrange a for babysitter and pet sitter to look after children and pets at a more comfortable temperature.
