Why Do My Nipples Hurt?

Normal Causes

- Hormones: Nipples can become tender or sore just before or during menstruation. This is due to the natural fluctuations in hormones

- _Birth Control: Hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, patches, or injections, can also cause nipple tenderness as a side effect.

- Pregnancy: Nipples may start to feel tender or sore early on in pregnancy. This is due to increased levels of hormones (progesterone and estrogen). Tenderness is usually most intense during the first trimester but may continue throughout the pregnancy.

- _Breastfeeding: During breastfeeding, nipples can become sore or cracked due to constant feeding and suction by the baby.

- Friction: Rubbing or chafing of the nipples against clothing or during certain activities (e.g., sports) can cause soreness or irritation.

Medical Causes

- Mastitis: An infection of the breast tissue, most common during breastfeeding, can cause nipple tenderness and pain. Other symptoms include fever, chills, and redness or swelling in the breast.

- Duct Ectasia: A condition where milk ducts behind the nipple become clogged, leading to pain and inflammation. It typically affects women who are no longer breastfeeding.

- Paget Disease: A rare form of breast cancer that can start on the nipple and cause it to become sore or inflamed. Additionally, the nipple may appear scaly, red, and crusty.

- Other Breast Disorders: Certain breast conditions, such as fibrocystic breast disease or an intraductal papilloma (small, non-cancerous growth within a milk duct), can cause nipple pain or tenderness.

If you experience persistent nipple pain or tenderness that does not improve within a few days or if you have other concerning symptoms, such as breast lumps, discharge, or changes in nipple appearance, it's essential to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
