How do you treat rickets in dogs?

Rickets is a metabolic disease of the bones that is caused by a deficiency of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphorus. It is most commonly seen in puppies that are not receiving a proper diet.

The first step in treating rickets is to correct the underlying deficiency. This can be done by adding a vitamin D supplement to the diet, or by increasing the intake of calcium and phosphorus. In severe cases, the dog may need to be given injections of vitamin D or calcium.

Once the deficiency has been corrected, the dog's bones will begin to heal. However, it may take several months for the bones to return to normal. During this time, the dog should be kept quiet and restricted from exercise.

In some cases, rickets can lead to permanent bone deformities. These deformities can be corrected surgically, but surgery is usually only necessary in severe cases.

With proper treatment, most dogs with rickets will make a full recovery.
