What happens if your apendix hurts?

Appendicitis is a condition in which the appendix, a small, finger-shaped organ attached to the large intestine, becomes inflamed and infected. If left untreated, appendicitis can lead to serious complications, including rupture and infection of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis).

Symptoms of appendicitis can include:

  • Pain in the lower right abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fever and chills

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to see a doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis can help to prevent serious complications.

Treatment for appendicitis usually involves surgery to remove the appendix. In some cases, antibiotics may be used to treat the infection.

After surgery, you'll need to stay in the hospital for a few days to recover. During this time, you'll be given pain medication and antibiotics. You'll also need to avoid strenuous activity for several weeks.

Most people recover from appendicitis without any problems. However, it's important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully to prevent complications.

If you have any questions about appendicitis, talk to your doctor.
