What Are the Treatments for Flea Bites on Humans?

Fleas are common pests found on animals, such as cats and dogs. However, these insects can jump from the fur of your animal onto your skin and bite you. These bites are small, yet will typically itch far more than a typical mosquito bite. This bite will not last forever. Reduce the itching with a few simple remedies.
  1. Wash and Cool the Bite

    • Wash the area of the bite. This will help remove any bacteria on your skin. Use an antiseptic soap and cold water. Do not use warm water, as this may make the itching worse.

To keep the bite from itching constantly, keep the bite cold. Place a cold pack over the bite. This will sustain a cold sensation over the itch for an extended period of time.

    Medication

    • If after a few days, your itch is becomes worse, try some medication.Use a topical medication on the bite, such as a mild steroid cream. A 1 percent hydrocortisone cream works well, and you can buy it over-the-counter at a pharmacy.

If the hydrocortisone does not hel, or if your itch continues to increase in intensity, take an oral antihistamine with an active ingredient such as brompheniramine maleate. Brand names include Dimetapp and Bromofed. The Mayo Clinic suggests using an antihistamine containing diphenhydramine, such as Benadryl, Tylenol Severe Allergy or chlorpheniramine maleate, such as Chlor-Trimeton or Actifed. This will relieve the itching from the bite and reduce swelling.
