How do people get tape worms?
People typically get tapeworms by ingesting food or water that is contaminated with tapeworm eggs or larvae. This can occur in several ways:
- Eating raw or undercooked meat, especially beef, pork, and fish. Tapeworm larvae, known as cysticerci, can be present in raw or undercooked meat. When consumed, these larvae can develop into adult tapeworms in the human intestine.
- Consuming contaminated food or water. Tapeworm eggs or larvae can contaminate fruits, vegetables, and water. This contamination can occur through contact with sewage or animal feces.
- Poor hygiene. Tapeworm eggs can be passed from person to person through poor hygiene practices, such as not washing hands after using the bathroom or before handling food.
Once tapeworm eggs or larvae are ingested, they travel to the small intestine, where they attach to the intestinal wall and develop into adult tapeworms. Adult tapeworms can grow several feet in length and can live in the intestines for several years. They can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Weight loss
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Anemia
- Malnutrition
In severe cases, tapeworms can cause intestinal blockage or perforation. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment for tapeworms typically involves taking medication to kill the parasites. Once the tapeworms are dead, they will pass out of the body in the stool. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove tapeworms that have caused intestinal blockage or perforation.
Preventing tapeworm infection involves following these steps:
- Cook meat thoroughly. Beef, pork, and fish should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
- Drink only filtered or boiled water, especially when traveling to areas where sanitation may be poor.
- Practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands after using the bathroom and before handling food.
- Treat any pets for tapeworms if they are known to be infected.
