Natural treatments can be used independently to kill fleas, though using natural treatments in conjunction with other flea products for the home will work more effectively. Powdered pyrethrum derived from dried pyrethrum flower heads works by paralyzing the flea, eventually leading to death. Food grade diatomaceous earth is also a popular natural flea treatment. Diatomaceous earth comes from the fossilized remains of ancient algae. It's sharp surfaces pierce the body of the flea leading to dehydration and death. It is safe to use not only in your home but on your pets as well.

There are a variety of flea traps on the market that can be placed around the home to help attract and kill fleas. Most flea traps plug into a standard electrical plug. A small light works to attract fleas to the trap where they become stuck on sticky paper that is attached under the light. Some flea traps may include a gel or liquid substance that will drown the flea once they enter the trap.
