Which Insects are in Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous earth, or DE, is useful in eliminating pests such as fleas, bedbugs, ants and cockroaches. Unlike pesticides that contain harsh chemicals or dangerous fumes, DE is 100 percent organic and all natural. It is safe to use in the home because it won't harm children and pets.-
Composition
-
It is sometimes mistakenly stated that the main component of DE is insects. It is actually composed of fossilized water plants (similar to algae) called diatoms. DE is essentially a mineral derived from the skeletons of these prehistoric plants. The diatoms are ground up into a powder form and used as an all-natural organic pesticide.
How it Works
-
Each DE particle has razor-sharp edges. When you sprinkle it throughout your home, its edges cut through the exteriors of insects that come in contact with it, causing them to dry out and quickly die. DE also shreds the insides of insects that inhale it.
Safety
-
DE's safety has fueled its popularity. It is nontoxic and will not harm people or animals. However, it is recommended that you wear protective eye coverings and a dust mask when applying it, since DE can irritate your nose and eyes.
Types
-
Two types of DE are on the market: food grade and pool filter grade. Make sure you differentiate between the two. You cannot use the products interchangeably. Pool filter DE has more silica and has been chemically treated. It is not safe to use in the home.
