How to Attract Yellow Flies

Yellow flies are one of the nastiest pests out there. Unlike mosquitoes, their bites actually hurt, and they can make otherwise enjoyable summer and fall days miserable. Unfortunately, they are also less susceptible to both insecticide and insect repellent, making them particularly difficult to eradicate. The best way to get rid of them is with fly traps, but you need to know how to attract yellow flies in order for this to work.

Things You'll Need

  • Beach ball
  • Black or blue tempera paint
  • 2 paintbrushes
  • Metal or wooden rod, about 4 feet long
  • Shovel
  • Black or blue electrical tape, to match the color of the paint
  • String
  • Organic glue

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the beach ball black or blue. Cover the surfaces thoroughly. Consider making two traps because some authorities say black works better to attract the yellow flies; others claim blue is best. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Plant the rod into the ground by pushing it into loose soil or digging a small hole in firm soil. Secure the rod.

    • 3

Cut a piece of string about 1 foot shorter than the rod. Tape one end to the top of the rod. Tape the other end to the beach ball.

    • 4

Cover the beach ball with glue, using the paintbrush. The flies will be attracted to the color of the beach ball and get stuck in the glue.

    • 5

Repeat as necessary depending upon how many flies are in your yard.
