Asian Lady Beetle: What to
The Asian lady beetle (_Harmonia axyridis_), also known as the harlequin ladybird or the multi-coloured Asian ladybird, is an invasive species of ladybird native to Eastern Asia. It is known to prey on other ladybird species, as well as other insects, and can become a nuisance when it enters homes in large numbers. Here are some tips for dealing with Asian lady beetles in your home:
* Prevention:
- Seal any cracks or gaps around doors and windows to prevent the beetles from entering.
- Install insect screens on windows and doors.
- Keep food covered and store garbage in sealed containers.
* Removal:
- Vacuum up the beetles and release them outdoors.
- Use a damp cloth to wipe up the beetles and drop them into a container of soapy water.
- Avoid crushing or squishing the beetles as they can release a foul-smelling substance.
* Chemical Control:
- Use insecticide sprays or dust specifically labeled for ladybugs/Asian lady beetles.
- Follow the instructions on the product label carefully.
- Apply insecticide outdoors around the perimeter of your home and in areas where the beetles are congregating.
* Natural Control:
- Introduce beneficial insects, such as lacewings or parasitic wasps, which feed on Asian lady beetles.
- Hang flypaper traps near windows and doors to catch the beetles.
Remember that Asian lady beetles are beneficial predators in gardens and should only be controlled if they are causing a nuisance or posing a threat to other insects.
