Does a insects skeleton grow outside of its body?
As an insect grows, its exoskeleton cannot expand, so the insect must shed its exoskeleton in order to grow larger. This process is called molting, and it occurs multiple times throughout an insect's life. During molting, the insect will secrete a new exoskeleton underneath the old one, and then the old exoskeleton will split open and the insect will emerge with a new, larger exoskeleton.
