What does ringworm look like?

On the skin:

- Red, itchy patch of skin that's slightly raised

- The edges may be sharp or irregular

- The edges of the patch may be darker than the center

- The center may be clear or covered in small, scaly bumps

- The patch may grow larger over time

- Multiple patches may appear

On the scalp:

- A round or oval area of scaling, crusting, and inflammation on the scalp

- Hair shedding (often temporary) in the affected area

- The affected area may be swollen and tender

On the nails:

- Thick, discolored, brittle, and crumbly nails

- The nails may separate from the nail bed

- The affected nail may be painful
