How long does malaria last?

Malaria symptoms usually appear within 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, although symptoms may appear as early as 8 days or as long as 1 year later.

Malaria is usually treated with antimalarial medication. The type of medication used and the length of treatment will depend on the type of malaria parasite and the severity of the infection. Most cases of uncomplicated malaria can be treated with a course of oral medication for 3 to 7 days. More severe cases of malaria may require hospitalization and intravenous medication for several weeks.

If malaria is not treated promptly and effectively, it can lead to serious complications and even death. These complications can include:

- Cerebral malaria: This is the most severe form of malaria and can cause seizures, coma, and death.

- Severe anemia: Malaria can cause the destruction of red blood cells, which can lead to severe anemia.

- Respiratory distress: Malaria can cause fluid to accumulate in the lungs, which can lead to respiratory distress.

- Kidney failure: Malaria can cause the kidneys to fail, leading to fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

- Liver failure: Malaria can cause the liver to fail, leading to jaundice, bleeding, and coma.

- Death: Malaria can be fatal if it is not treated promptly and effectively.
