How to Kill Parasites With Temperature

No one in their right mind would drink dirty water filled with bacteria without boiling it. In the same way, food is refrigerated to cold temperatures to prevent bacteria and other diseases from contaminating the food. Temperature plays a key role in control of bacteria and disease. You can also kill parasites with extreme hot and cold temperatures. Depending of the type of parasite, different temperatures are needed to kill them.

Instructions

  1. Nematodes

    • 1

Heat the area infected with nematodes to 100 degrees F. Use a space heater to control the temperature. Keep the heat on the area for 10 minutes. Nematodes die in temperatures above 95 degrees F.

    • 2

Check the temperature of the area using a thermometer.

    • 3

Put the nematodes in a Petri dish. Place the Petri dish in the freezer. Nematodes become inactive at 55 degrees F.

    Quahog Parasites

    • 4

Boil water in a cooking pot to above 212 degrees F. Place the parasites in the boiling water. Quahog parasites are able to withstand temperatures of 90 degrees F.

    • 5

Pour five cups of water into a Styrofoam container. Place 50 grams of dry ice into the container.

    • 6

Place the parasites into the water and dry ice. Quahog parasites are able to withstand temperatures of 10 degrees F. Dry ice turns the temperature of the water to -108.7 degrees F.
