Where are Brown Recluses Found?

The brown recluse spider is a native species in the United States and it's bite can be painful. A severe reaction to the bite can produce damaged, gangrenous tissue in extreme cases. Brown recluses are common and may be found in a variety of locations in the United States.
  1. Geographical Area

    • Brown recluses naturally live in portions of the southeastern, southwestern and midwestern regions of the United States, as well as in much of the Deep South. They have also been found in rare cases outside of their geographical distribution area.

    Common Habitats

    • Houses and other buildings are among the environments in which brown recluse spiders live. They are also found in outbuildings such as barns, storage sheds and garages, as well as underneath logs, loose stones in rock piles and stacks of lumber.

    Inside the Home

    • Infested areas may include attics, basements, crawl spaces, cellars, closets, wall voids and duct work in households. They may also seek shelter in storage boxes, shoes, clothing, folded linens and behind furniture.
