What Is the Meaning of Yellow Rubber or Plastic Wristbands?

The LIVESTRONG bracelet has become a message of hope since 2004. Developed by Lance Armstrong in a partnership with Nike, the thin yellow wristband became a popular fashion accessory to some and a message of hope and understanding for those with cancer--specifically, bladder cancer.
  1. History

    • In 1996, world-renowned cyclist Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with an advanced form of testicular cancer which spread to his abdomen, brain and lungs. After overcoming the disease in 1997, he developed the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which funds cancer survivorship. By 2003 LIVESTRONG.com had become an online source for cancer survivors. The LIVESTRONG wristband launched in 2004 and the "Wear Yellow, LIVE STRONG" campaign began.

    Significance

    • The yellow ribbon or yellow wristband is a message of hope to people with bladder cancer. In regard of the LIVESTRONG bracelet, the yellow color was adopted from the Tour De France which Armstrong competes in. It also raises money for cancer research and support groups/foundations committed to assisting those suffering from cancer.

    Where to Buy

    • Most sporting goods stores will carry them. The retail price is $1. You can also find them online on several websites (see Resources). Be aware, though, that there are knockoffs and imitators. If you buy a knockoff, the proceeds might not go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The LIVESTRONG bracelet is unisex and can be worn by young and old alike.

    Lance Armstrong Foundation Today

    • Since being founded in 1997, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has opened survivorship clinics across the nation, handed out more than 261,000 "Living After Cancer Treatment" brochures, given out 34,000 "LIVESTRONG Survivorship Notebooks" to cancer survivors, and held more than 620 grassroots events across the United States on LIVESTRONG Day.

    Other Cancer Bracelets

    • Beaded and metal bracelets also exist for various cancer awareness projects. These are made by foundations or even individuals with cancer who use the profits to benefit research and raise awareness of their causes. Some other cancer causes are represented similarly with color bracelets, the specific color denoting the cause.
