How many types of bone are there?
There are five main types of bone:
1. Long bones are characterized by their long, cylindrical shape. They are found in the limbs and digits and are responsible for most of the body's movement.
2. Short bones are cube-shaped or somewhat rectangular. They are found in the wrist and ankle.
3. Flat bones are thin, flat plates of bone. They form the skull, rib cage, and pelvis.
4. Irregular bones have a complex shape that does not fit into any of the other categories. They include the vertebrae, facial bones, and hip bones.
5. Sesamoid bones are small, round bones that are embedded in tendons near joints. They help to protect the tendons and reduce friction.
