What Are the Treatments for Back Pain Caused by Cancer?

Back pain can be devastating for those with cancer in that area of the body. The cancer cells may attack and weaken the spine, causing functional problems and never-ending pain. Medications to relieve the discomfort may not be enough and unconventional procedures may be needed to alleviate pain.
  1. Vertebroplasty

    • Vertebroplasty is used to strengthen weakened and devastated bones in the spine. A special grade of cement is used to support and strengthen bone that has been weakened by cancer. Doctors look for bones in the spine that have been destroyed by cancer and inject the cement to relieve pain. It can bring stability and function to the area.

    Kyphoplasty

    • Balloon kyphoplasty treats weaknesses in the spine that have been caused by cancer. Small balloons are inserted into the spine. After they are inserted, they are slowly inflated to help the vertebra reach its normal position. A special adhesive is then used to keep the balloons in the proper spot. Trials have shown that this technique can help relieve pain and restore some height.

    Electrical Nerve Stimulation

    • A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit can provide electrical stimulation to bones in the back that have been ravaged by cancer. Small pads are attached to the skin with an adhesive and small amounts of electricity are released through those pads near the damaged bones in the spine. These charges can stimulate the bones and nerves and relieve the onset of pain
