What is the meaning of biopsy?
- Needle biopsy: A thin needle is inserted into the affected area to extract a small tissue sample.
- Surgical biopsy: A small piece of tissue is surgically removed from the affected area.
- Endoscopy: A thin, flexible tube with a camera and light on the end is inserted into the body to view and collect tissue samples.
- Laparoscopy: A small camera is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision to view and collect tissue samples.
The type of biopsy performed will depend on the condition being investigated and the location of the affected tissue. Biopsies are usually performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that the patient can go home the same day.
