What does it mean when the top of your nipples turn brown?

Possible causes of brown nipples:

*Puberty:* During puberty, the breasts and nipples may undergo changes in size, shape, and color. It is normal for the nipples to become darker during this time.

*Pregnancy and breastfeeding:* Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause the nipples to become darker and larger.

*Sun exposure:* Excessive exposure to sunlight can cause the skin on the nipples, as well as other parts of the body, to become darker and more pigmented.

*Aging:* As people age, the skin may become thinner and more fragile. This can cause the veins beneath the skin to become more visible and lead to the appearance of dark circles around the nipples.

*Certain medications:* Some medications, such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, can cause changes in skin pigmentation, including darkening of the nipples.

However, changes in nipple color, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms, such as changes in the breast shape or texture or discharge from the nipple, should be brought to the attention of a doctor for evaluation.
