How to Start Tamoxifen

Tamoxifen is an anti-carcinogenic drug; in other words, this drug works against cancer. Tamoxifen is used to treat and/or prevent certain types of breast cancer. More specifically, it blocks the effects of estrogen, a hormone that some types of cancer need to grow. The brand name for this drug is Soltamox.

Women who are at high risk for cancer due to family history may decide to take this medication after consultation with an oncologist (cancer doctor). It is also commonly prescribed for women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS); this is cancer of the milk-producing ducts within the breast. Additionally, tamoxifen may be prescribed after breast surgery and radiation have been completed. There may be other uses for this drug as they are discovered and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
