Preparation of Carboplatin

Carboplatin is an intravenous chemotherapy drug, used in treating several types of cancer. Like many medicines of this type, proper dosage and administration of Carboplatin are required for it to be effective.
  1. Function

    • Carboplatin is used to treat head, neck, and lung cancers. In addition, it can be used as a palliative option for ovarian cancer. It is transparent and has no odor. Though it cannot always cure cancer, it can often force the cancer into remission, or an inactive state.

    Features

    • Carboplatin is shipped from the manufacturer already prepared for injection, so no preparation on the part of the administering party is necessary. Each milliliter dose contains water to facilitate injection, 10 milligrams of Carboplatin and 10 milligrams of mannitol. The mannitol acts as a diuretic for urine excretion after the medicine has circulated through the body.

    Considerations

    • Only medical professionals with experience in chemotherapy infusion can administer Carboplatin. The intravenous administration needs to be supervised so that the fixed dose is given correctly, ensuring that the patient does not receive too much or too little of the medicine. Chemotherapy drugs are toxic and can cause harm if not administered properly.
