1
Express your confidence in the medical field. Tell your friend about how much you trust the doctors, medical techniques, research and treatment centers. Back up your reasoning with solid facts. Find inspirational stories about individuals who were once in his situation but survived and live happy, healthy lives. If you know someone else who was in his situation, ask him to answer questions from your friend with cancer. Seeing healthy cancer survivors and having confidence in the medical treatments available will lift her spirits and give her a more positive outlook on life.

2
Assure her that she has accomplished a lot of good in her life, especially if she has an uncertain future or doesn't have a good chance for survival. Remind her of times she has helped others and changed others' lives. This will give her confidence in herself to fight to survive to continue making the world a better place or give her confidence to leave this world knowing she made a positive change.

Talk about the promises of the life that comes after death if you share the same religious views. Tell your friend that even though he might leave this earth, there is another, greater adventure ahead of him even if he doesn't win this battle.

4
Treat your friend with cancer like a friend--not like a cancer patient. Remember that just because she was diagnosed with cancer does not mean she changed as a person. Do things with her that she enjoys to help take her mind off the illness. If she needs to vent her feelings, be there to listen and talk through her anxieties.
