Chemotherapy & Mental Side Effects
The majority of patients who are diagnosed with cancer undergo chemotherapy as a form of treatment. Unfortunately, chemotherapy can have painful and complicated side effects on the body and brain.-
Significance
-
Chemotherapy affects the way the brain functions. The effect can last many years after the person receives treatment.
Brain Fog
-
One of the most common mental side effects of chemotherapy is brain fog. According to the New York Times, for years, some oncologists discounted or trivialized brain fog. Now, brain fog is recognized as a legitimate condition and is called "chemo brain."
Misconceptions
-
According to the American Cancer Society it isn't just chemotherapy that affects the brain. The chemicals produced by the body in response to the cancer may be partly responsible for changes in brain function as well.
Cognition
-
Some of the mental components that are affected in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy include concentration, comprehension and reasoning. Some patients may experience memory problems as well.
Considerations
-
Some changes in mental ability are subtle. However, most people who experience changes are well aware of the differences in their thinking. John Hopkins University explained that there is certain things individuals can do to better cope with chemotherapy side effects. Patients should exercise the body and mind with physical activity and puzzles to help with mental functioning.
