Magnets and Cancer Remedies

New and increasingly inventive methodologies for combating cancer are being tried all the time. While some of them are effective, others are without a lot of scientific support to buttress their claims. Magnet therapy falls into the latter category, as there is not any real scientific evidence supporting its ability to treat cancer.
  1. Cancer

    • Cancer is a malignant growth of cells that occurs when a cell mutates unexpectedly and refuses to die on schedule. As these cancerous cells multiply at a rate that exceeds the development of "normal" cells, they spread throughout the body over time, causing the cessation of vital biological processes.

    Cancer Remedies

    • According to the American Cancer Society, the traditionally accepted methods for fighting cancer fall into three categories: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. All of these methods act to excise or kill the cancerous cells through manual removal, application of poisonous drugs or exposure to radioactive compounds, respectively.

    Magnet Therapy Theory

    • According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the concept behind magnet therapy consists of the utilization of magnets strategically placed around the body to purportedly "realign" the individual's bioelectric field. Individuals who practice magnet therapy claim that magnet therapy can enhance the body's natural healing ability, along with improving overall feelings of well-being.

    Evidence

    • According to the ACS, no scientific studies support the claims being made by individuals who practice magnet therapy. There are, however, anecdotal reports of magnet therapy having positive effects on a number of illnesses, but these claims remain unsubstantiated by science.

    Considerations

    • As magnet therapy is relatively safe (unless you currently have a pacemaker or other electronic implant), there is no real harm in using it alongside more conventional cancer fighting methods such as those described above. The ACS warns against relying on magnet therapy exclusively, as its unproven nature could result in a poor prognosis for your illness.
