Liquid Radiation Treatment for Cancer

Radiation therapy is one of the principal treatment methods for dealing with cancer, but there are many variants on the basic theme. Radiation therapy is generally divided into two types -- external and internal, with liquid radiation therapy being a form of internal radiation used to combat cancer from within the body.
  1. Liquid Radiation Methodology

    • Understand that liquid radiation therapy is most generally prescribed only for specific types of cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, these include cancers of the thyroid or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Liquid radiation therapy is most often used not as a stand-alone treatment, but in conjunction with other cancer-fighting methods such as surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy works to eradicate cancer by destroying the cancer cells' ability to reproduce, rendering them unable to continue spreading throughout the body.

    Liquid Radiation Procedure

    • Know the various ways that liquid radiation can be administered and how liquid radiation therapy will affect your body. Liquid radiation can be given intravenously, through a pill, or by drinking a radioactive liquid. According to the National Cancer Institute, the liquid radiation will then travel through the body, seeking out and disabling cancerous cells. Liquid radiation treatment will cause all of your bodily fluids to become radioactive for a time, as the body processes and disposes of the radiation through the digestive system. Liquid radiation therapy also comes at a price, as there are some side effects to bear along with the treatment. These include feelings of general fatigue, sores in or around the mouth, sexual dysfunction, localized and systemic swelling, and difficulty swallowing.
