Flax for Cancer Treatment
-
Why Flax is Effective
-
Flax is naturally rich in three nutrients that are extremely useful in preventing and fighting cancer--alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), lignans, and dietary fiber.
ALA has been shown to minimize the growth of cancer cells. A study performed on mice showed ALA was effective at blocking compounds that promote tumor-growth.
Lignans are a powerful antioxidant, known to block free-radicals, which have been shown to contribute to tumor cell growth. In another mouse study, lignans were shown to reduce the number and size of tumors. Flax seed can contain up to 800 times more lignans than any other plant-based source.
Fiber has been linked to a reduced risk of developing cancer, and is especially useful in fighting colorectal cancer.
Application
-
Flaxseed and flax oil are generally well tolerated by the body and there are not a lot of restrictions on how it should be used. However, it is important to keep in mind that since flax contains large amounts of protein, it is important to drink ample amounts of water to offset potential bowel-affecting consequences.
Also, flax has been known to reduce effectiveness of certain medications, so it is important to consult a health professional before consuming high amounts of flax if you are currently on any type of medication.
Flax oil may be taken in capsule form, but flax oil does not contain the same high concentration of lignans that flaxseed does. The most effective way to utilize flax is to mix crushed flaxseed with water and drink it. There are also a number of whole grain breads that contain flaxseed available in many grocery stores.
