Side Effects From Gleevec

Gleevec is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). It is a kinase inhibitor which is available in tablet form for use in children and adults. Gleevec may be administered as a daily dose ranging from 100 mg to 800 mg.
  1. Fluid Retention

    • Patients taking Gleevec can expect some swelling, but there is also the risk of severe fluid retention which can be life threatening. A weight gain of 3 lbs. in 24 hours should be immediately reported so appropriate treatment can be initiated.

    Liver Dysfunction

    • Due to the risk of liver dysfunction, liver enzymes should be routinely monitored in
      patients taking Gleevec. Liver dysfunction can lead to liver failure if not treated
      in a timely manner.

    Stomach Symptoms

    • According to FDA.gov, Gleevec is associated with stomach irritation and has been
      reported to have caused perforations in the wall of the stomach. Stomach irritation,
      nausea and vomiting can be reduced by taking this drug with food and a full glass of
      water.

    Skin Effects

    • In rash caused by Gleevec, steroidal creams can be applied to the affected
      area. In severe cases, oral steroids and antihistamines may be prescribed.

    Muscle Symptoms

    • Muscle pain and spasms are common side effects. These symptoms can be alleviated
      with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.

    Caution

    • Over-the-counter and herbal supplements should not be taken to treat side effects
      without consulting a physician. At the onset of side effects, Gleevec should not be
      stopped unless a physician advises to do so.
