About Cancer Treatment Centers

People diagnosed with cancer often face an overwhelming number of treatment options. The oncologist's office may not be able to meet all of the patient's needs, or a patient may simply desire more resources and comprehensive care. Options for treatment include home health or alternative cancer therapy, or a patient may opt for a cancer treatment center. Once the decision is made to choose a treatment facility, there are some important qualities to consider, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
  1. Specialization

    • Every type of cancer has different risks and treatments. The treatment center should have experience and a high success rate with the type of cancer being treated. There are more than 1,400 cancer facilities approved by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Children may fare better in an environment that specializes in pediatrics. The ACS site states, "More than 90% of children with cancer in the United States are treated at a center that is a member of the Children's Oncology Group." There are 250 facilities that are members of this group.

    Quality and Accountability

    • The NCI reminds patients to check ratings for centers with government, patient, cancer or other groups. Also check to see whether the center is accredited by reputable organizations. The facility should also have internal standards for quality control.

    Insurance and Affordability

    • The patient's insurance provider may play a determining factor in where the patient seeks help. If the patient is not covered under insurance, the patient may need to talk with his or her doctor or the facility to see what payment options are available, according to the NCI.

    Availability of Resources

    • Also consider the availability of patient resources. Some centers offer social workers and other services to help patients with payment, family support groups and other needs.

    Location

    • Location is another important consideration for cancer treatment. Cancer treatments often take months to complete. However, a patient who lives in a small town may need the care that can be provided only in a larger city with better cancer treatment options. If a patient chooses a center that is farther away, living arrangements have to be taken into consideration.
