How to Prevent Cancer Recurrence

A cancer diagnosis is scary. But if caught early, the survival rate is high, wherein sufferers can live a long life. Unfortunately, new cancerous cells can develop. As a result, patients have to re-start treatment or have surgery to treat the condition. There isn't a surefire way to prevent a cancer recurrence, but you can reduce your risk.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain a healthy weight. According to the American Cancer Society, there is a link between cancer and obesity. To reduce your risk of re-developing cancer, shed extra pounds and keep a healthy body weight. Get active and start a workout routine. Exercise three times a week for 30 minutes.

    • 2

Reduce your alcohol intake. Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol can cause a cancer recurrence. To lower your risk, drink no more than five alcoholic beverages a week.

    • 3

Stay away from cigarettes. Smoking increases your chances of developing lung cancer, esophageal cancer, oral cancer and breast cancer. Continuing to smoke after treatment can cause a recurrence.

    • 4

Eat a low-fat diet. A healthy diet contributes to overall health, and it lowers your cancer risk. To remain cancer-free, decrease your intake of fatty foods and increase your intake of lean means, fruits and vegetables.

    • 5

Take an antioxidant. Green tea, fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, which promote overall health by protecting your cells from damage.
